Pyrenees: From Gías to Boum, the long ridge of the 30 three thousand peaks

To say the truth, we must begin by saying that it is a physically demanding activity in an austere and remote place in which we will have to carry bivy gear and have a very good weather forecast. If you are in very good physical condition, you fell fine in expose places up the mountains and you are looking for an adventure with a certain commitment, perhaps this activity is for you.

Despite been not very famous, without a doubt, this is one of the most important ridges in the Pyrenees and surely where most 3.000 meter peaks are linked.

We will ride the 10 kilometres ridge that form the French-Spanish border between the peaks of Gías and Boom. Between main and secondary summits, there are 30 three thousand on this route, highlighting the peaks of Clarabides, Gourgs Blanc, Jean Arlaud, Xel de la Vaque, Perdiguero, Tucas de Literola, Crabioles and Maupás.

ACTIVITY DETAILS

Trip duration is 5 or 6 days, depending on the group. We can’t make a detailed description of the days since the bivouacs can be done at various points and we’ll decide these according to the weather conditions, the group pace and the mountain conditions. An approximately program for a group could be the following:

  • Day 1: Travel to Benasque and approach to the Estós refuge.
  • Day 2: Section from Guías to the Puerto de Oô
  • Day 3: Section from Puerto de Oô to the Lower Col of Literola.
  • Day 4: Section from Lower Col of Literola to Boom and descent to Benasque through the Remuñe valley.
  • Day 5: back home

This long activity has several possibilities of escape in case of bad weather or tiredness.

We also have the possibility to do it sleeping every night in a refuge (Refuge du Pôrtillon, 2560 mts. And Refuge de Maups, 2432 mts.). This option gives agility to climbing carrying less weight and resting at night, but it also forces us to accumulate more ascent and descent meters, going every afternoon to a mountain refuge.
