Here are the scrambling difficulty grades description:
- Grade 1: Manly hiking with some short sections in which to use our hands. Aerial or narrow passages with exposure. Avoidable difficulties and rope use only for the more insecure. Easy retreat from route.
- Grade 2: Short sections in which the use of a rope is recommended for safety. Climbs up to grade III and some possible abseiling for downclimb. Retreat may be complex.
- Grade 3: More committed and technical scrambles, normally moderate climbs up to grade IV. Must do abseils during the route. Use of rope it’s mandatory. Complicated retreat once on the route
- Grade 1, Laberinto and Pared de Santillana: Perfect first contact with the scrambles in Pedriza. We will start our route from Canto Cochino parking lot and we will enter in the Laberinto (Labyrinth) of La Pedriza, a wild and losing area like no other. Small climbs here and there will leave us at the foot of the imposing pared de Santillana. We will skirt it on its right heading towards the north face, where a series of ledges and boulders will allow us to climb to its summit with amazing views of La Pedriza.
- Grade 2, El Yelmo: The most visible summit from almost any point, a unique viewpoint in the heart of La Pedriza. We will begin to climb from Canto Cochino through the Hueco de las Hoces, where some small climbs will warm up our bodies. Once in the Yelmo meadow and depending on mountain conditions, we can choose different climbs to its summit. Slabs and chymneys up to grade III in a unique setting.
- Grade 3, El Pájaro: The summit of the summits of La Pedriza. We will make the ascent by climbs of up to grade IV through its west face to reach the place known as the salon del pájaro (Bird’s hall), some bouldery traverse will leave us just below its summit. From here we’ll “only” have to climb a smooth grade IV slab to get to the the most beautiful viewpoint of La Pedriza as it is located right in the middle of it. A 20 meters abseil will leave us again in the bird’s hall and we will downclimb its eastern face, thus making a circular route to this mythical cliff.
